Monday, February 22, 2010 Faculty honored Several members of the Psychology faculty recently received honors. Karen Bierman, Distinguished Professor of Psychology, has been selected as Reg Adams, Assistant Professor of Psychology, received this year's Sage Young Scholars Award from The Society for Personality and Social Psychology. This award honors junior faculty who "have demonstrated exceptional individual achievements in social and/or personality psychology (broadly defined), conducting research that places them at the forefront of their peers." Terri Vescio received the Early Career Citation for Service to the Society of Personality and Social Psychology. The citation highlighted Terri's outstanding contributions to the Training Committee of SPSP. |
Thursday, February 11, 2010 Research featured in Newsweek Research by Assistant Professor of Psychology Ken Levy and Staff Psychologist Kristen Kelly was recently featured in Newsweek and is the subject of a Scientific American podcast. Wednesday, September 9, 2009 Distinguished Publication award Professor Stephanie Shields has received the 2009 Distinguished Publication Award from The Association of Women in Psychology for the edited special issue of the journal Sex Roles titled “Intersectionality of Social Identities: A Gender Perspective.” In describing the volume, the award committee notes that “The scope is impressive, the quality of the contributions uniformly high, and the topic is timely and one of central importance to the psychology of women.” |

Wednesday, August 12, 2009 APA Presidential Citation Professor Janet Swim has received a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association (APA) in recognition of her contributions in chairing an APA task force on the “Interface between Psychology and Climate Change.” As a member of the APA Council of Representatives, Dr. Swim was instrumental in moving global climate change onto the APA agenda generally and in the creation of this task force specifically. Monday, August 10, 2009 Office Olympics winners The Psychology Department teams, the Psych-a-delics and the PsychClones, received the Grand Champion trophy for raising the most money in the 2nd Annual Liberal Arts United Way Office Olympics on August 6.

Monday, March 9, 2009 Undergraduate Awards Karen McInnis, who will graduate in May 2009, has been selected to represent Psychology as Department Marshal at the commencement ceremony and to receive the Cofer Psychology Award. Christina Baer, Stevie Grassetti, Kelly McCloud, Karen McInnis, Zachary Infantolino and Nicole Zinsser have received Evan Pugh Scholar awards. Begun in 1933, these awards are for full time undergraduate juniors and seniors who are in the upper 0.5 percent of their classes. |

Lori, whose adviser is Ken Levy, has previously received a prestigious National Institute of Mental Health Individual Predoctoral Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Fellowship and Penn State's College of Liberal Arts Dissertation Support Award. |

Monday, September 8, 2008 Psychology Department Welcomes New Faculty The Department of Psychology welcomes four new faculty members this fall. Alysia Blandon (Ph.D., University of Michigan, 2005) studies family systems, children’s social and emotional development, and cultural and contextual influences on development and individual well-being. Nancy Dennis (Ph.D., Catholic University, 2004) focuses on the cognitive and neural mechanisms of learning and memory in young and older adults, and on understanding cognitive decline with aging and mechanisms of compensation. Ping Li (Ph.D., University of Leiden, 1990) conducts research on language acquisition and bilingualism, bridging from language science to neuroscience. Steve Wilson (Ph.D., University of Pittsburgh, 2008) studies the role of self-regulation and external cues on drug addiction, primarily in the context of smoking. |

Tuesday, November 20, 2007 Penn State to offer two psychology degrees online Penn State is preparing to open two new online degree programs in psychology — a first for public universities participating in online education. Beginning this month, Penn State will open admission to its bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees in psychology to online degree students. Students can begin applying to the program later this month, and courses will be offered starting in the summer 2008 semester. Click here for more |
Thursday, November 1, 2007 International Center for the Study of Terrorism Names New Director Dr. John Horgan, currently a tenured Lecturer at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, and one of the world's top experts on the psychology of terrorism, will take over as Director of the International Center for the Study of Terrorism this Fall. Dr. Horgan will have appointments in both the Department of Psychology and in Information Sciences and Technology. Kevin Murphy, who founded the Center and served as its first Director will assume the title of Director of Special Projects and will continue to work with the Center and a wide array of initiatives. |
