A Word From the Department Head

Welcome to the Department of Psychology at Penn State. I invite you to explore our web site and learn more about the exciting research, teaching, and outreach being done in the Department.

Psychology is one of the largest departments at Penn State’s University Park campus.  We have 45 tenure-track faculty, including four new to Penn State for Fall 2008, two clinical professors who direct our Psychological Clinic, a dozen fixed-term faculty, and 125 graduate students. Our more than 800 undergraduate majors can earn either a BA or a BS degree, the latter with several options. The Department admits Ph.D. students in the areas of Clinical (Adult and Child), Cognitive, Developmental, Industrial/Organizational, and Social Psychology. The Department’s APA award-winning Specialization in Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (SCAN) is open to graduate students in all areas, as is a dual Ph.D. degree program with Women’s Studies.

Members of the Department conduct a great deal of exciting research, much of which is described elsewhere on this website. Undergraduate involvement in research is common, with more than 200 undergraduate students registering each semester to work on research projects for credit. Increasingly, Centers and less formal networks serve as the location for research and training. Centers affiliated with the Department include the Child Study Center, the International Center for the Study of Terrorism and the Center for Language Sciences.

An exciting development is that Moore Building, home to most of the Department, is slated for renovation and the addition of a new wing. Department members will be working with an architectural firm during the 2008-09 academic year on the design of our new and enhanced space.

I hope that this website provide the information that you are seeking about the Department. The contact page provides mail and e-mail addresses if you would like to be in touch.

Thank you for your interest in Penn State’s Department of Psychology.
