These are the Eberly College of Science, the College of Medicine at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, the College of Agricultural Sciences, the College of Health and Human Development, the College of Engineering, the College of the Liberal Arts and the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. The Huck Institutes is dedicated to enhancing Penn State's ability to prepare students for tomorrow, strengthening research in the life sciences, encouraging research alliances across disciplinary boundaries.

The Huck Institutes encourages collaborative research alliances through a variety of mechanisms. It provides funding for graduate fellows and graduate assistants enrolled in its multidisciplinary, Inter-college graduate degree programs, encouraging students to select complementary advisers knowledgeable in different fields. The Huck Institutes also cooperates with departments of the participating colleges to identify emerging areas of research importance and assists in hiring new faculty with a particular emphasis on encouraging faculty to participate in collaborative and multidisciplinary efforts.

Huck Institutes resources support research through state-of-the-art Shared Technology Facilities. These include the Electron Microscope Facility, the Flow Cytometry Facility, the Center for Computational Genomics, the Nucleic Acid Facility, the Hybridoma and Cell Culture Laboratory, the DNA Microarray Facility, the Macromolecular X-ray Crystallography Facility and the Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Facility. These facilities serve both faculty and students to enable research and familiarize students with highly specialized equipment and techniques.

For the prospective graduate student, the Huck Institutes Integrative Biosciences Graduate Degree Program, the Neuroscience Graduate Degree Program, the Masters Degree in Biotechnology Program and the Inter-college Graduate Degree programs in Genetics, Ecology, Physiology and Plant Physiology offer a unique opportunity to learn about and work in multiple disciplines, calling upon the expertise of individuals in different departments, different colleges and even on different campuses, supported by modern telecommunications facilities and equipment. The doctoral programs allow students not only to explore new conceptual connections, but to engage in active group learning experiences and to explore a variety of potential career opportunities before graduation.

Social Science Research Institute
The mission of the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) is to promote research encompassing the wide range of skills and perspectives that are needed to solve complex social problems. SSRI fosters communication and collaboration across the full range of social science disciplines and provides a shared infrastructure for social science research that enables faculty to conduct high-quality studies. Uniting outstanding social science faculty across the university, SSRI encourages and supports: Research of individual investigators from diverse fields; Research collaborations across disciplinary lines, across colleges and research centers, and across universities; Programs to support multidisciplinary graduate training; and Multidisciplinary centers of activity within SSRI that focus on different areas of social concern.

Survey Research Center
SSRI's Survey Research Center (SRC) provides state-of-the-art and cost-effective survey research services to Penn State faculty and administrative units. It contributes to the education and training of Penn State students in areas related to survey research, and also serves as a focal point for Penn State faculty in a variety of disciplines whose research interests touch on the methodology of survey research. The Survey Research Center provides services in the areas of survey design, sampling, and data collection (including telephone, mail, face-to-face, internet surveys and focus groups); survey data management; and data analysis. Center staff assist researchers in estimating the costs associated with the collection and analysis of survey data.

The Methodology Center
The Penn State Methodology Center, housed in the College of Health and Human Development, is devoted to the advancement and dissemination of statistical methodology related to research on the prevention and treatment of problem behaviors.

Children, Youth, and Families Consortium
The CYFC promotes research, outreach, and teaching to address critical social issues in the area of children, youth, and families. Its goals include the promotion of interdisciplinary activities and the integration of research, outreach and teaching; the support of basic and applied research informing prevention and intervention; working to understand and address factors that place children, youth, and families at risk for poor outcomes as well as promote well-being; and the application of Penn State University resources to the benefit of society.

Child Study Center
The Child Study Center (CSC) is an active and exciting venture whose mission is to integrate diverse scientific approaches to understanding children and families with respect to three major initiatives: Early Pathways to Competence, Parenting at Risk, and School Readiness. Across these initiatives, the CSC conducts research, provides mental health services through the Child and Adolescent Clinic, and offers outreach consultation to the community at large. The CSC is also a rich training environment for graduate and undergraduate students in Psychology and related disciplines. The CSC has excellent, fully-equipped observational laboratory space for participating faculty, and can provide staff support, meeting rooms, and research space in addition to copiers, fax machines, related equipment, and access to a shared network. Observational rooms are equipped with two-way mirrors and video equipment, and can accommodate simultaneous lab visits. Workrooms are located adjacent to the observation rooms to accommodate staff and coding needs. Major equipment that is available for project use includes a state of the art video studio for each observation room. Wall/Ceiling mounted cameras are in each room and additional cameras can be set to video through the two-way mirror. Editing equipment is also available, as are coding stations that include a VTR (SVHS) and monitor. The Child Study Center has convenient parking and easy accessibility for people with limited mobility, and the Center has a comfortable waiting and play area for parents, infants, and their siblings.

Center for Work and Family Research
The mission of the Center for Work and Family Research (CWFR) is to promote excellence in research and education on issues at the intersections of work, family, and community. Established in January 2002, the Center encourages interdisciplinary collaboration on a broad array of research topics and approaches to the study of work and family from the vantage points of work organizations and of employees and members of their families, broadly defined. The CWFR facilitates research on professionals as well as low-income workers, women and men, and parents as well as nonparents.

Penn State Justice and Safety Institute
The Penn State Justice and Safety Institute was formed in 1971 to meet the professional development needs of law enforcement and public safety professionals. Since then more than 450 municipal, county, state, and federal police agencies have entrusted the training of more than 3,000 law enforcement professionals to the institute. The institute’s mission is to provide educational and training programs, related consulting services, and research that enable our clients to more effectively serve their increasingly diverse constituencies.

Penn State Outreach
Penn State Outreach is the largest unified Outreach organization in American higher education, serving more than 5 million participants, viewers, and listeners at over 500 locations, from all 50 states and 80 countries annually. The organization supports outreach initiatives by academic colleges, campuses, and centers, as well as Cooperative Extension offices across Pennsylvania. Each year more than 2,000 programs and services are offered in collaboration with the academic colleges, where more than 1,800 faculty members deliver programs through the University’s Outreach units. The resources of three outreach units will support the proposed Center. The Penn State World Campus will aid in the development of on-line and DVD-based educational materials.

General Clinical Research Center
The General Clinical Research Center is part of a national network of similar centers funded by the National Institute of Health through the National Center for Research Resources. The Penn State General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) was funded by the National Center for Research Resources in July, 1995 (Grant Number M01RR10732) and is located at the M.S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey and the Elmore Wing of the Noll Research Center in University Park. The primary mission of the Center is to provide research infrastructure for investigators who conduct research with human subjects. Investigations carried out can include studies of normal and abnormal human function and studies of cause, prevention, progression, and cure of diseases.
